“In 1611 a new English translation of the Bible appeared. It carried the authorization of the British monarch, King James 1. James I was the son of the infamous Mary, Queen of Scots, the rival of Queen Elizabeth, and who had been raised Presbyterian. When he became king of both Scotland and England at the death of Elizabeth there was great hope that he would side with those in the English church that wanted to abolish episcopacy, a party that came to be known as Puritans. He was unsympathetic to the anti-episcopacy crowd, but he was willing to support the translation of a new bible, and so four hundred years ago one of the most influential books in the English language was published.” —Celebrating 400 Years of the King James Bible

Citizen Journalists Offer Disturbing Video From Inside North Korea → nymag.com

The first clip, showing an emaciated orphan scavenging for grass to feed her animals, with no food for herself is just — too much for me. “Meanwhile, the country’s supreme leader is more concerned with placating his hawkish generals, refusing to rejoin talks to curb North Korea’s nuclear program in exchange for reduced sanctions and aid.”

On Fun Size Advice

Has anyone ever brought up your blog in front of you, not knowing that you were the writer?

Yep. I’ve even been quoted to myself. One time, during a little cocktail party conversation some random lawyer busted out my definition of cheating. The dude had it memorized. Verbatim. Gotta admit, it felt pretty awesome.

— Dear Coketalk

I understand her reasons for remaining anonymous from here to eternity, but it’s a shame that she chooses so. For me at least. I would so love to meet this woman. And I’m aware that some of her post can be incredibly scathing, profane, and truly unpleasant to some. This dose not mean that she can’t be unusually kind, and gentle when the moment calls for it. She can — I posted an example recently. In all cases, it’s nice to read she sometimes has been quoted to herself. Rightly so. Now, I wouldn’t tell anyone to actually go and read her posts because, like I said, they’re not everyone’s cup of tea. Yet, if someone requests it, I would more than gladly show that person some of my favorites.

Tumortown by Christopher Hitchens → vanityfair.com

I know Christopher Hitchens can be an insufferable asshole, but his last two articles concerning his struggles with cancer are insightful and very well written. This is the third installment of the series, in which he addresses the almost unlimited number of quasi-therapies that cancer patients are offered, and the cutting edge ones that are being thwarted by opponent of stem-cell research.

"Don't opt out of the TSA scanners because you'll cause a huge delay and make OTHER people late. Don't be selfish." → mohandaskgandhi.tumblr.com

Where is this logic coming from?  Personally, I’m opting out of flying altogether while this practice is in place but if I were to hypothetically, you’d be damned if you thought I was going to let some stranger essentially take nude pictures of me and expose myself to nonessential radiation.  I don’t know if those scans are being deleted or saved either.  Why should I have to allow my personal privacy to be invaded for nonessential reasons so you can get to the Bahamas faster?  You know what’s pretty inconvenient to others?  A government so paranoid and bought out by lobbyists that it’s actually looking at its citizens naked and groping them, thinking it’s improving national security.  Do you know what’s even more inconvenient?  People who are willing to go along with anything and don’t bother to ask questions because it’s easier and causes less trouble.

Noncompliance with injustice is essential.
